KUALA LUMPUR TO HOST SIXTH WAITGC QUALIFYING ROUND
KUALA LUMPUR, 12 SEPTEMBER 2012: Brace yourself for another exciting week of the World Amateur Inter Team Golf Championship as the sixth or last qualifying round of 2012 tees-off at two Kuala Lumpur golf clubs, Templer Park Country Club and Kota Permai Golf and Country Club, from 10 to 13 September.
Designed by world renowned golf professional Jumbo Ozaki, Templer Park Country Club is set in the midst of a natural sanctuary and surrounded by virgin forest with the famous Bukit Takun rising majestically to the left and a breathtaking view of the many lakes. Templer Park Country Club has been described as one of the most scenic and challenging courses in Malaysia.
It is not just the immensely scenic Bukit Takun (Takun Mountain) that creates a very special feel to Templer Park. Jumbo Ozaki's fabulous design also has a lot to do with its stunning golf layout. Add in top quality green-keeping and all the ingredients are in place for a challenging and hugely enjoyable round of five-star golf. The flatter front-nine will acquaint you with Ozaki's stylish earth-mounding and bunkering, which, in combination with a light scattering of trees, provide excellent definition to every hole. Some good-width fairways, others made tighter by occasional water hazards and OB ensure the need for some attention to accuracy from the tee, backed-up with good quality approach work.
The tournament will then continue at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club. This club never fails to pleasantly surprise the first-timer to this magnificent Ross Watson masterpiece carved out of an oil palm estate. The charisma of Kota Permai is that it makes you want to come back again and again to enjoy what is popularly described as the best golfing experience in the region.
Since it was opened for play in March 1998, Kota Permai has won numerous awards for excellence, among them being Best Course, Best Course Maintenance and Best Greens. Such recognition by industry leaders and the golfing media underlines the fact that Kota Permai is widely accepted as among the best golf courses in this region.
For this sixth qualifying round, a total of 21 teams have already confirmed their participation. Australia will be sending 16 teams, followed by Malaysia with two teams, while Brunei, Japan and Sweden will be represented by one team each.
The top three teams from gross category and top two teams from nett category will be qualified to compete in the WAITGC Grand Final which will take place from November 6 to 8 at Royal Perak Golf Club.
Played in Strokeplay gross for the gross category and Stableford for the nett category, WAITGC is an initiative of Tourism Malaysia to promote Malaysia as a golf destination. It has emerged as a well-regarded tournament as well as one of the highly anticipated golfing events on the golfer’s calendar. It has attracted more than 500 participants each year since its inaugural debut in 1994.
Well into its 19th season, the home-grown event does not only test the participants’ golfing skills but also encourages them to discover Malaysia’s culture, tradition, delectable cuisines and many more. WAITGC is also open to the media, which consequently boosts the stature of the championship and puts Malaysia on the world stage.
