BAZAAR RAMADAN 2005
There is no better time for locals and tourists to titillate taste buds than by touring the various buka puasa (breaking of fast) spots and trying out the various delicacies each site offers during the month-long Bazaar Ramadan held throughout the country.
Ramadan is a fasting month for Muslims all over the world. During this month, Muslims perform their obligatory abstinence from food and drink from dawn to dusk. In Malaysia, when one thinks of Ramadan, the array of food at the accompanying bazaar comes to mind. Many do not mind lining up as early as 4pm to make their purchases.
In Malaysia this year, the Bazaar Ramadan will be held during the fasting month from 5 October to 2 November. The official nationwide launch is on 7 October at Taman Shahbandar in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.
As in previous years, there will be a variety of delicacies and freshly baked treats to tempt the eye from basketfuls of kuih (local 1 cake) assortment to rows of side dishes to complement a family dinner.
The Ministry of Tourism has identified the Bazaar Ramadan as the time when tourists can join Muslims and non-Muslims alike to savour authentic Malay dishes offered by street vendors and restaurants in hotels throughout the fasting month.
Food aside, the bazaar also enhances racial harmony, religious tolerance and boosts Malaysia's image as a peaceful Islamic country.
