Kuala Lumpur, 20 July 2009 – The 20th Video Urology World Congress will be converging in Kuala Lumpur from 24 to 26 July, bringing over 800 local and foreign medical practitioners from more than 40 countries. The congress is an annual gathering of presentations, lectures, panel discussions and debates on urology, the treatment of diseases affecting the urinary tract and the male reproductive system.

The Video Urology World Congress is the brainchild of Prof. Arthur Smith, Founding President of the Video Urology Association. According to Prof. Smith, the yearly Video Urology Congresses are popular since it primarily deals with the art of urologic surgery and “we all want our patients to have the best treatment and achieve the best results from surgery and the meeting is designed with this in mind.”

Jointly organised by the Malaysian Urological Association and Video Urology Association, Dr Rohan Malek, Organising Chairman, 20th Video Urology World Congress commented, “The purpose of the congress is to provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and information between renowned world experts and regional and local specialists in the various fields of urology, thereby enhancing the depth of knowledge and expertise of everyone involved”.

A key feature of the Congress will be three half-day moderated sessions that will feature multiple surgeries being carried out by practitioners in the field to be simultaneously broadcast in real-time via video conferencing technology from the Institute of Urology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur to the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

“Intense developments on therapeutic methods and new surgical techniques are constantly taking place. New technologies arise and it is important that urologists are kept abreast so that they can match their knowledge and practices to patient needs, said Dr Rohan.

Dr Rohan added that some of the new technologies included the use of robot, laser and minimal access (keyhole) surgery.

There will be a total of 11 live surgeries throughout the 3-day Congress, which will also feature new methods to help in the treatment of patients with prostate cancer, kidney cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and stones.

LIVE SURGERIES TAKING PLACE DURING THE 20th VIDEO UROLOGY WORLD CONGRESS

Day 1

Robotic Prostatectomy
Using the technologically-advanced Da Vinci Robot to assist the surgeon in performing an operation to remove totally a cancerous prostate.

Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy
Minimal access (keyhole) surgery where long instruments are introduced into the body and with the aid of a camera and laparoscope, an operation is done to remove half a kidney which has cancer.

Low Dose Prostate Brachytherapy (SEEDS)
Technique for treating prostate cancer by inserting low dose radioactive seeds into the prostate.

Day 2

TUEB
New technique to surgically treat a benign prostate (BPH) using a scope where prostate tissues are cut and separated from the prostate.

Greenlight Laser
Using Greenlight Laser as a medium to treat a benign prostate (BPH) using a scope.

Revolix Laser
Using Thulium Laser as a medium to treat a benign prostate (BPH) using a scope.

Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HoLEP)
Using Holmium Laser as a medium to treat a benign prostate (BPH) using a scope.

Day 3
Single Port Access Nephrectomy
Newest minimal access (keyhole) surgery where all the long instruments and laparoscope are introduced into the body through a single small opening and an operation is done to remove a kidney.

Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty/Laparoscopic Heminephrectomy
Minimal access (keyhole) surgery in children where long instruments are introduced into the body and with the aid of a camera and laparoscope, an operation is performed to repair a congenital condition.

Digital Flexible URS
State-of-the-art flexible video scope used to visualize the ureter and kidney collecting system.

MEMOKATH 051CW stent – Ureteric Stricture
Permanent self-expanding metallic stent used to treat a narrowing in the ureter.

The Malaysian Urology Association (MUA) was registered on 23 July, 1974. Under the MUA constitution, the aims and objectives of the Association are:
