MEDIA RELEASE
Persatuan Sejarah dan Warisan Melayu Pulau Pinang (PEWARISAN)
which is an NGO based in the Universiti Sains Malaysia, is organizing
a cultural festival at Dataran Warisan Alang on Jalan Sungai Burong, Balik Pulau, named :

“MAI BALIK PULAU”

This event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism & Culture Malaysia.

The main objective of this festival is to bring together the people of Penang of all ages to enjoy the many facets of Malay culture, and create awareness especially among the youth of the variety of healthy and rewarding activities that they can indulge in.

Bringing people together to Balik Pulau hopefully will give them a new consciousness of appreciating the serenity and beauty of village life, natural landscapes and traditional culture and architecture. These are assets of Penang which need to be preserved.

“MAI BALIK PULAU” will be held over a Friday –to- Sunday weekend during the long school holidays so that families from all parts of Penang and out-of- State will be able to participate in the variety of programs planned. With the active support of Tourism Malaysia and Penang Global Tourism it is also hoped that foreign visitors to Penang would be encouraged to participate. For them “A Walk in the Village” is also planned.

During the three days from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st Dec. there will be a variety of displays and demonstrations held throughout the day such as exhibition of traditional agricultural tools and fishing equipment, Malay weapons, demonstrations of tanjak-folding (traditional head gear) making traditional cakes and sweets, iron ware, mengkuang weaving, and display of traditional Malay costumes, Malay wedding, and performance of music, and others.

Many scheduled activities are programmed especially sports events such as Sepak Raga and Silat competition, traditional use of bow and arrows, and cooking contest. A coloring competition for young children will also be held.

Also included in the program are a session on Oral History of Balik Pulau, and a talk about the “Malay Mind and Philosophy in Traditional Arts” to provide an intellectual dimension to the festival.

Entrance to MAI BALIK PULAU is free.

The Organizing committee is encouraging all those who come to the event will don traditional costumes. A surprise gift awaits the best dressed.

Parents whose children are keen to participate in the coloring competition are requested to register their children.

Those who wish to participate in the Walk in the Village should wear comfortable shoes, and bring hats and umbrellas for any weather eventualities.
