Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Wins Second Consecutive TravelWeekly Award

Kuala Lumpur, 24 July 2008 – The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) celebrates its third anniversary with a second consecutive win of the ‘Best Exhibition and Convention Centre in Asia’ award at the TravelWeekly (Asia) Industry Awards 2008 held in Singapore. Other nominees in the same category were regional counterparts Suntec Singapore and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Said Mr Peter Brokenshire, General Manager, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, “Winning the award for the second year in a row is true testimony to the importance of teamwork and how much Malaysians, with an international edge, are capable of achieving. This triumph must be shared with our Team Malaysia partners Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) who have worked tirelessly with the Centre to actively promote the country, Malaysia, the city, Kuala Lumpur and its supporting infrastructure, and in turn, our venue, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, as one of the region’s leading convention destinations. Indeed, this is a win for Malaysia.”

Thanking supportive clients, Brokenshire added that the accomplishment is a mandate for the Centre’s dedicated team to strive harder to deliver quality, professional service in line with their commitment to ensure “our client’s success is our success”.

Nomination criteria for the category of ‘Best Exhibition and Convention Centre’ were based on superior products and excellent service; outstanding efforts and professionalism; fulfilling promises to customers; ability to react and adapt to market changes; and customer-focused, innovativeness in products and services, maintaining high standards at all times.

Since its official opening in June 2005, the Centre has grown from strength to strength. In 2007 alone, the Centre saw an estimated 32 percent growth over 2006 for the total number of events held and an encouraging increase by 26 percent in number of delegates/visitors attending events at the Centre. This equates to 628 events attended by over 2.1 million people, which produced 2.2 million delegate days in 2007.

With its ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and OHSAS 18001 certifications and achievement of the Green Globe Benchmarked status (environment), the Centre was also recently awarded The BrandLaureate Awards 2007-2008 for brand excellence in Product Branding – Convention Centre.

The TravelWeekly (Asia) Industry Awards 2008 was hosted by TravelWeekly, the most influential business-to-business (B2B) news resource for the travel industry. The awards represented industry achievements in five categories: Tourism Products and Services, Tourism Related Entities, Personalities, Online and Technology, and Marketing Promotion. The shortlisted category nominees were selected by a panel of judges from the travel industry, with voting then open to readers between 13 May and 16 June via TravelWeekly’s online portal. TravelWeekly, TravelWeekly China and EVENTS (MICE Magazine) readers number a massive 25,000 names.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) is a component of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and is managed and operated by Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture company between KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd and AEG Ogden Pty Ltd, Australia.

The Centre is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and OHSAS 18001 and achieved Green Globe Benchmarked status (environment) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points Certification (HACCP) recognition, the international food safety system for international convention facilities and five-star hotels.

The Centre, comprising two auditoria (seating 3,000 and 500 respectively), 9,710 sq metres of exhibition halls, a Grand Ballroom which seats 2,000 diners, a Banquet Hall for 500, a Conference Hall for 1,800 and 20 other meeting rooms, providing 20,059 sq metres of function space in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
