Kuala Lumpur, 11 March 2019 – 60 years. 200 careers and counting. Over 1 billion dolls sold. Inspiring 3 generations of girls.

Since 1959, Barbie® has inspired girls to be anything. From princess to robotics engineer, astronaut to zoologist, there isn’t a plastic ceiling Barbie hasn’t broken.

“Barbie® encourages imagination, expression and discovery through play and believes girls should never know a world, or a job, or a dream that women haven’t conquered,” said Ivan Franco, Country Manager, Mattel Southeast Asia.

“For 60 years, Barbie® has championed girls, inspired generations to believe through make believe and showed them that they have choices. Through our global platform, we are igniting a movement to further establish Barbie® as the ultimate girl empowerment brand.”

Barbie® Illuminates Southeast Asia

In Southeast Asia, Barbie® illuminates iconic landmarks in pink to mark the start of Barbie’s 60th Anniversary celebration; from Malaysia’s KL Tower, Philippines’ Manila City Hall, Indonesia’s Museum Fatahillah, Singapore’s Singapore Flyer to Thailand’s Emquartier.

En. Zulkifly Md. Said, Deputy Director General (Planning), Tourism Malaysia, said, “Tourism

Malaysia is pleased to have this opportunity to collaborate with Mattel on this landmark occasion.

The celebration of Barbie’s 60th Anniversary is a timely effort as we build up towards our own landmark campaign, Visit Malaysia 2020. It is the perfect platform to promote Malaysia and the

Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign in Malaysia, regionally and globally.”

He added, “Moreover, the launching of Barbie’s new travel line makes sense for international toy brand Mattel and Tourism Malaysia to partner and collaborate together. We look forward to seeing

Malaysia’s iconic destinations and landmarks being promoted alongside Barbie’s 60th

Anniversary Celebration to spur domestic and international tourism.”

KL’s celebration was graced by women who are breaking boundaries in a variety of diverse career fields – the nation’s very own role models to inspire the next generation such as entrepreneur, Datin Vivy Yusof, Co-founder of FashionValet and Founder of the dUCk Group; Professor Dr.

Mazlan Othman, Malaysia’s First Astrophysicist; Dato’ Tiffanee Marie Lim, VP Brand, Creativity, and Talent Management for Limkokwing University and Creative Director of Limkokwing Fashion Club; Datin Winnie Loo, Founder and Chief Creative Director of A Cut Above Group of Salons and Academy; Amber Chia, Supermodel and Principal of Amber Chia Academy; and Karen Leong, Founder of Karen Leong Cake Design.

The event presented 60 Barbie® dolls styled by the Limkokwing Fashion Club and A Cut Above Academy to celebrate Barbie® through the years. There were an additional 6 Barbie® dolls styled by Dato’ Tiffanee Marie Lim and Datin Winnie Loo to represent the 6 decades of Barbie® style.

The dolls were modelled by 30 young girls from the Amber Chia Academy and 6 adult models from Limkokwing University who were dressed in Barbie®’s 2019 newest apparels and shoes.

The celebrations concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony featuring a one-of-a-kind Barbie® 60th Anniversary cake designed by Karen Leong.
