OCTOBER SALES MISSION TO CHINA
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, YB Dato' Donald Lim, heads the
sales mission to China from 15 to 21 October 2006. The delegation will be
visiting Zhengzhou (Henan province) and Jinan, Yantai and Qingdao (Shandong
province) to strengthen the presence of Malaysia in the China market.
The other main objectives are to publicize the Visit Malaysia Year 2007
events; to develop the market and promote Malaysia as an enjoyable holiday
destination to Chinese tourists; to update the Chinese travel trade industry on
new tourism products, packages and attractions; and to provide the Malaysian
private sector with a platform to enhance their networking with the respective
Chinese counterparts.
The delegation comprises officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Tourism
Malaysia, travel agents, hotel operators and representatives from several State
Governments. The activities of the sales mission include meetings with the local
government and Tourism Bureau, media interviews, travel mart and
appointments with Chinese key tour operators.
The sales mission is in conjunction with the ASEM Forum & Exhibition
on Tourism and Investment Cooperation in Yantai, China, from 19 to 22
October. YB Dato' Donald Lim will be attending the launching of the forum &
exhibition organised by China's Ministry of Commerce, China National Tourism
Association (CNTA) and Shandong Provincial Government on 19 October in
Yantai. Tourism Malaysia is also taking part in the fourday
exhibition.
The Malaysian tourism industry remains upbeat based on the buoyant
tourist arrivals from January to July 2006, which registered a total of
10,014,540 tourist arrivals compared to 9,485,074 for the same period in
2005, indicating an increase of 5.6%. During the month of January to July this
year, 208,474 Chinese tourists visited Malaysia compared to 173,289 in the
same corresponding period in 2005, representing an increase of 20.3%.
China is the leading market outside the ASEAN countries for Malaysia. It
ranked number five in the top ten tourist generating markets to Malaysia in
2005.
