MALAYSIA'S TOURISM HIGHLIGHTS OCTOBER 2012

Putrajaya, 9 October 2012 – Foreign and domestic tourists in Malaysia will have an exciting month filled with exciting tourism events in October. Below are some of the highlights:

THE ART OF TIME EXHIBITION

The Art of Time exhibition is back for a second edition of one of the most comprehensive collection of the world’s luxurious and iconic watch brands. Discover limited edition timepieces, museum timepieces, high jewelry timepieces, many of which will be unveiled for the first time in Malaysia. Additional exhibition highlights include behind the scenes live demonstrations of ingenious watch-making and craftsmanship by Master Watch Maker from Ulysse Nardin and Engraver from Jaeger Le-Coultre seen for the first time in Malaysia. Among the line-up of brands include, Bell & Ross, Girard-Perregaux, Graham, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Richard Mille, Tag Heuer, Ulysse Nardin, and the ultimate in luxury phones - Vertu.

MALAYSIAN MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX 2012

Join some 70,000 MotoGP fans at the Sepang International Circuit for another round of thrilling race and to see the world’s best riders in action. This year’s MotoGP promises some exciting lineup of events including three world-class concerts, autograph sessions with the riders, a Motorsport Business Forum (on 18 October at Pan Pacific Hotel KLIA), contests to win Benelli and Keeway bikes, and an international motorcycle expo by some of the world’s major bike manufacturers. A special tribute to the late Marco Simoncelli is also being arranged to remember the legendary rider who died at last year’s Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

CIMB CLASSIC

Now in its third edition, the CIMB Classic 2012 will feature 48 players, 30 from the PGA TOUR, 10 from the Asian Tour Order of Merit and 8 sponsors’ exemptions. The elite field, which includes Tiger Woods as well as 2011’s defending champion, Bo Van Pelt, will see the players compete for a prize purse of US$ 6.1 million, with US$1.3 million going to the winner.

The CIMB Classic is the only PGA TOUR-sanctioned event in the region, held at the Mines Resort & Golf Club, Kuala Lumpur. Co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour, the CIMB Classic has played host to some of the best names in the world of professional golf.

CUTI-CUTI 1MALAYSIA BIKE RIDE SUNDAY @ RAUB

The Minister of Tourism, YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen, will lead a cycling tour of Raub on the first Sunday of every month. It is part of the Ministry of Tourism’s campaign to promote cycling as a tourism activity and as a healthy recreation.  This free activity is open to all, just bring your bicycles. The route begins at Taman Tasik Raub and explores the surrounding areas; it is an eye-opener to the lifestyle of the Raub people. The “Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia Sunday Bike Ride @ Raub” is a collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and local organisations and authorities, such as the Kelab Berbasikal Reborn Raub and also local residents in Raub.

MEDIA EXPLORACE AND KELANTAN HOMESTAY EXPERIENCE

Tourism Malaysia is organizing a special treasure hunt event for members of the Malaysian media. In the style of “Explorace,” the treasure hunt will be conducted in Kelantan, exposing participants to the rich culture and unique village homestay concept in a state known for its performance arts, cuisine and natural wonders. Participants will experience traditional village lifestyle as they are “adopted” by the homestay families in Jeli and Gua Musang.

PERHENTIAN ISLAND CHALLENGE 2012

Perhentian Island Challenge (PIC) is an annual adventure race that challenges participants to take on the tough yet beautiful terrain of Perhentian Island. The 21km race involves trail running, orienteering, kayaking, swimming and obstacle course, with different routes planned out each year. Participants, limited to only 500 in elite and novice categories, will be tested on their endurance and fitness levels reflecting the theme of this year’s Perhentian Island Challenge, “Discover Your Limits.” A total prize money of RM55,000 await winners.

MALAYSIA WEEK IN LONDON

Malaysia Week returns to London this year from 6 to 10 October. The week-long cultural festival at London's Southbank promotes Malaysia as a top tourist destination by showcasing the country's multi-ethnic cultures. Themed Faces of 1Malaysia, the event features a carnival of traditional games, as well as cultural performances representing different races and ethnic groups in the country. Malaysian artists and craftsmen are on hand to demonstrate their skills and sell their artworks and craft products. Visitors to the event have the opportunity to savour delicious and popular Malaysian cuisines in typical hawker style, as well as succulent tropical fruits from Malaysia. 

This is the fourth time Malaysia Week is being held in Britain. It was previously held in Covent Garden in 2006 and 2007, and Potters Field Park in 2008.
