LONELY PLANET RANKS MALAYSIA AMONG THE WORLD'S TOP 10 TRAVEL DESTINATIONS TO VISIT IN 2014!
KUALA LUMPUR, 31 October 2013 – Malaysia has been ranked as among the top ten tourism destinations in the world to visit for 2014, by the popular travel guide, Lonely Planet, as well as being the only Asian country to have made the list.
Malaysia ranks number ten on the list, with Brazil, Antarctica and Scotland emerging as the top three destinations to visit in 2014 according to Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2014.
Lonely Planet described Malaysia as “rolling out an array of new attractions”, highlighting several new destinations, such as the newly opened Melaka Bird Park, the newly opened family theme parks such as Legoland Malaysia and Hello Kitty Land in Johor, as well as Gaya Island Resort on Pulau Gaya in Sabah.
The list also mentions of the soon-to-open Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) catering to the booming budget airlines sector, as well as cycle tourism in areas such as Sabah, Penang, and Kuala Lumpur.
Ratings were based on “scores for topicality, excitement and that special X-factor,” as determined by Lonely Planet’s inhouse experts and outside writers.
“We are elated with this ranking from one of the travel industry’s most authoritative publications, the Lonely Planet.
“This ranking comes at an auspicious time for Malaysia, as it gears up for the Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2014 campaign, themed: Celebrating 1Malaysia Truly Asia with over 200 activities and events scheduled throughout the year,” said Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director-General (Promotions), Madam Chong Yoke Har.
“The VMY 2014 campaign will be the country’s fourth Visit Malaysia Year, and is estimated to attract 28 million tourists to Malaysia, reaping RM76 billion in tourist receipts,” she added.
Malaysia was also listed as the World’s Top 10 Destinations and the Best Value Destination in 2010 by the Lonely Planet.
