DO YOU KNOW KUCHING IS RECOGNISED AS THE CREATIVE CITY OF GASTRONOMY BY UNESCO?

● Kuching is the first city in Malaysia to be recognised under the UNESCO Creative City Network (UCCN) in the category of Gastronomy.

● This makes the Sarawak’s capital to join 36 other Gastronomic Cities on the list, making it the second city in Southeast Asia, after Phuket, to gain such recognition.

● Sarawak now has two recognitions after Gunung Mulu National Park was designated as a World Heritage site. UCCN was introduced by UNESCO in 2004, aiming to foster innovation and creativity as a drive towards sustainable city development.

● Today, it has a total of 295 cities globally working together towards a common objective: to place creativity and cultural industries at the heart of their development plans at the local level and cooperate actively at the international level.

● Aside from gastronomy, this network includes six other creative fields: crafts and folk art, design, film, literature, media arts, and music.

● The diversity of Sarawak’s unique traditional cuisines and culinary practices are some of the criteria contributing to the significant achievement.
