History
According to historical records, Kuala Selangor has been settled since the 16th century. The whole area was under the rule of the Melaka Empire and, later, the Johor Empire.
But by the end of the 17th century, the Bugis had conquered these places. In 1857, the nobles and residents united and formed a government in Selangor, with Raja Lumu (the son of Raja Bugis), installed as the first ruler of Selangor.
After 1857, the state's administrative centre shifted from Kuala Selangor to Klang. Nevertheless, Kuala Selangor continued to play an important role in the history of Selangor: it was the scene of many battles against the Dutch and later, the British.
Kuala Selangor is blessed with many interesting historical and natural attractions. These include Bukit Malawati (Malawati Hill), the fabulous Kuala Selangor Nature Park and the famous fireflies at Kampong Kuantan and Tanah Alam. Other than these, several other areas such as Pulau Angsa, Pantai Remis have been identified as potential areas for tourism development due to their promise of good diving, snorkelling and developing convenient beach resorts within easy reach of the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
EconomyBeing the richest and the most developed state in Malaysia, Selangor's economy is diversified with a good mix of agricultural, industrial, commercial and tourism activities.
Though rubber, palm oil, and tin mining are the core of the state's economy, the development of its port, Port Klang, and the rapidly expanding industrial areas are increasingly contributing towards the prosperity of the state. Tourism is also beginning to have a major impact on the economy and Selangor is in the process of developing its many attractions, both natural and man-made.
