Watersports
With its pristine beaches and
waters, Malaysia is an ideal
destination for water sports,
such as snorkelling, wind
surfing, jet skiing and
kayaking. Some of the best
coral reefs in the South China
Sea can be viewed on
Malaysia’s East Coast, which
makes it a popular destination
for snorkelling. The best
locations for snorkelling are
Pulau Tioman, Pulau Redang and
Pulau Perhentian. On the west
coast of Malaysia, try Pulau
Payar Marine Park, a short
boat ride from Langkawi
Island.
For wind surfers, try our
north-easterly winds, 20 knots
or more, on the East Coast
from February to March. The
surf can hit a 3-metre peak if
you’re lucky! Wind surfing is
also a popular option on the
west coast, available at most
beaches especially in Penang
and Port Dickson.
Adventurers will enjoy the
thrill of white water rafting
or kayaking in Malaysia’s
rivers. An excellent
destination is the Kampar
River in Perak, which boasts
14 rapids, which are class
I–III. Also in Perak, Slim
River is for diehard
adventurers – a class III
white water rafting
experience. For a more
family-friendly destination,
Sungkai River is great for
those with little or no white
water rafting experience.
